Chilanga Banda
Nat Zenit
This piece is a sort of highlight reel of Mexican slang; I used a clip from a Cafe Tacvuba concert, of the singer saying: "Shoutout to the students out there in Mexico, over there in Chile, even here in Argentina I imagine there's a movement; Also all over the place, in Brazil of course- obviously the Authoritarianism- from let or right- is in charge so thanks to the energy of the youth that is refreshing us and making us realize things that we can't see. It's great to have that observer, that judge that can check on the political class and what they do - they want to sell and buy everything-- polluting the water, the earth, the air -- we ask ourselves what are we gonna drink? What are we gonna eat/ what are we gonna breathe? -- It's all gold, bills, shit, it's all objects --- " This whole speech by Rubén Albarrán reflets the Mexico I know and the one I can stand proud with. Something I struggle with is being proud of my country or even calling it that, Mexico has a questionable government and culture, full of hate and incapability; but there is a side of Mexico -- "el pueblo"-- who has been looking for justice and that side is the one that makes me proudly stand as a Mexican person. I used clips of my friends saying phrases in Mexico City slang, since to me, joking around while commentating on political topics is what Mexico is all about and the song choice " Chilanga Banda" along with Ruben's speech and these clips from my friends reflect that.
