I was invited to DJ for SIM Eventworks's Motherland Dance event and play music from my mother (is)land of Mauritius! I wasn't familiar with the contemporary music scene in Mauritius, so building a DJ set was a fun challenge that led me to discover some cool independent artists that are from where I'm from. Mauritius is a tiny island (29 miles wide!) off the coast of Madagascar. Mauritian Creole is the dominant language, however French and English are used more formally in Mauritius as it was a French and British colony before gaining independence in 1968. The music scene in Mauritius is pretty small so selecting tracks felt kind of limited, however I enjoyed the search and ultimately I am very proud of the set I ended up playing. It was definitely a memorable SIM event and it warmed my heart to hear my friends who left from that event to support the Northeastern encampment say that the energy of the DJ sets carried them through the difficulties of Friday night and Saturday morning.
