"Party back home" Mix
Nat Zenit
I chose songs from what I remember parties sounded like growing up in Mexico; there's an energy that the party scene had and the songs share the classic reggaeton drums and rhythm as well as themes about sex and drugs often portraying extremely sexual even violent content; something for which this music scene, what I known as "perreo", has been highly criticized. However, in my community "perreo" is seen as something which empowers women and queer people. It's used to hypersexualize oneself and take back sexuality from male oppressors which is something very present in Mexico. By playing this and dancing to it we reclaim songs written with the intent to put us down and turn them into a way to express ourselves and feel free.
